About master tonics.
Master tonics — sometimes called fire cider — are traditional folk-medicine preparations built on raw apple cider vinegar, infused with garlic, onion, horseradish, ginger, turmeric, and cayenne. The recipe has been documented in American herbalism since at least the early 1900s, and was popularized in its modern form by herbalist Rosemary Gladstar in the 1970s.
The pharmacology has held up remarkably well under modern scrutiny. Garlic has documented immune-support effects in multiple meta-analyses. Quercetin (from onion) is one of the better-studied flavonoids for seasonal allergy support. Horseradish isothiocyanates have been studied head-to-head against pharmaceutical sinus medications. Ginger and turmeric are among the most-validated anti-inflammatory herbs in modern phytomedicine.
The vinegar isn't decorative — raw apple cider vinegar with the mother is doing acid extraction of polyphenols the herbs can't release into water alone, and the mother itself contains probiotic acetobacter.
What to look for
- ◆Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the mother (not pasteurized or distilled)
- ◆All six classic botanicals: garlic, onion, horseradish, ginger, turmeric, cayenne
- ◆Macerated for at least 14 days
- ◆Amber glass bottle
- ◆No added sweeteners
Quick answers
Why does it taste so strong?+
The combination of raw ACV, garlic, horseradish, and cayenne is genuinely intense — that's the formula. Most people take it as a 1 tablespoon shot followed by water or juice.
When is it most useful?+
Daily through cold and flu season (October-March), or as a daily preventative if you work in a high-exposure environment.
