Practitioner's guide
About medicinal mushrooms.
Functional mushrooms — Lion's Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Chaga, Turkey Tail, Maitake — have moved from health-food-store curiosity to mainstream supplement category over the last decade. The clinical evidence base is real but uneven: Lion's Mane has solid trial evidence for cognitive support, Turkey Tail has the largest cancer-adjuvant literature of any medicinal mushroom (PSK is approved as adjunct therapy in Japan), and Reishi has been studied for stress, sleep, and immune modulation.
Two technical questions matter when buying: **mycelium vs fruiting body** (both have validated bioactive compounds in different ratios; best products test their beta-glucan content), and **single-species vs blend** (start with a blend like Stamets 7 if you're new; rotate to single species once you know what you're targeting).
Our mushroom line is anchored by Host Defense (Paul Stamets' brand — the most-cited mycologist in US medicine) and Gaia Herbs (fruiting-body specialists).
What to look for
- ◆Look for tested beta-glucan content (not just 'extract weight')
- ◆Either mycelium-on-grain (Host Defense) or fruiting body (Gaia Herbs) — both legitimate
- ◆Single species (Lion's Mane alone) or multi-species blend (Stamets 7) — both work
- ◆Avoid 'mushroom extract' products with no species or extraction details on the label
- ◆Effective doses: Lion's Mane 500-1500 mg, Reishi 1000-2000 mg, Cordyceps 1000-3000 mg daily
