Host Defense

Host Defense was founded by Paul Stamets, the most-recognized mycologist in the United States. Stamets has published 50+ peer-reviewed papers on fungal pharmacology, holds nine US patents in the field, and is one of the few mushroom researchers whose work has been cited in major medical literature (NIH, Mayo Clinic).

The company grows its mushroom mycelium on certified organic brown-rice substrate in a dedicated facility in Olympia, Washington. The decision to grow mycelium rather than fruiting body has been a source of running debate in the supplement industry — Host Defense's position is that mycelium contains a different but valid pharmacological profile (particularly higher concentrations of erinacines in Lion's Mane), and that the brown-rice substrate gets enzymatically transformed during colonization into a "myceliated grain" with its own immunomodulatory action documented in trials Host Defense has funded.

Every batch is third-party tested for beta-glucan content (the polysaccharide complex responsible for most of the immune effects), and the results are published. The Stamets 7 multi-mushroom blend is one of the most-cited mushroom supplements in functional-medicine practice.
